Uganda and Egypt will tussle it out in the Zone Five Championship final on Sunday at Lugogo.

The winner of what promises to be a grueling tie, will qualify for the forthcoming 2023 FIBA Women Afrobasket in July/August in Kigali, Rwanda.

Egypt sealed her fate after beating Kenya 82-57, a result that handed the Lionesses their first loss of the tournament.

Egypt, Kenya and Uganda, the latter who beat Rwanda 78-70 in Saturday’s last game, finished the tournament tied on wins and losses.

The teams where also tied on wins and losses in games amongst themselves, and the classification criteria went down to games points differences.

Egypt who lost to Uganda by one point, finished with a positive 24 after beating Kenya by a difference of 25.

Uganda lost to Kenya by eight but beat Egypt by one, so their points difference was negative seven (-7).

Kenya finished with a lowly -17; beat Uganda by eight points but lost to Egypt by 25.

And it’s the end of the road for Kenya who are the defending champions, having beaten Kenya in 2021 final in Kigali to then qualify for the 2021 Afrobasket in Yaounde, Cameroon.

Egypt on the other hand, will be eyeing revenge against a Ugandan side that beat them 86-85 on Wednesday.

Against Kenya, Egypt flipped the switch and everything rightly fell into place in a game they shot 50% from the field.

Raneem Elgadawy led the way with a game high 23 points, adding 11 rebounds to complete her double double.

The Gazelles on the other hand, led Rwanda by 18 points at one stage, but trailed at one point in the last quarter.

And the side had to dig deep, helped bya home crowd, to win by eight points.

Brenda Ekone scored 22 points and eight rebounds, Jannon Otto had 22, while Hope Akello (15) was the other Gazelles player to reach double figures.

In fact, Otto and Akello finished with a double double each after grabbing 11 and 13 rebounds respectively.

And now, the qualification slot has gone down to winner between Egypt and Uganda, the latter having taken part in the 1997 and 2015 Afrobasket tournaments.
