Gazelles picked their first win after a hard fought 86-85 victory over Egypt at the ongoing FIBA Zone Five Afribasket Women Qualifiers at the Indoor Arena in Lugogo.

The Gazelles were up by 10 inside the last quarter but they had to survive a late rally by Egypt to finally get off the mark.

Jannon Otto led the way with 27 points and 14 rebounds while Hope Akello also grabbed a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Three more Gazelles players – Brenda Ekone (13), Flavia Oketcho (10) and Maria Najjuma (10) – scored in double figures.

Raneem Elgadawy had 22 points and 14 rebounds, Meral Andelgawad scored 12 points and 11 rebounds while Nadine Mohammad and Soraya Deghady contributed 17 points each in a losing effort for Egypt.

It was a positive and needed response for Uganda who lost their opener to defending champions Kenya on Monday.

Coaches Alberto Antuna, Nicholas Natuhereza and Mavita Ali will be well aware that it’s still a long way to go, as the team returns to action on Thursday against South Sudan.
