Victoria Pearls Set For Build-Up Tournament Ahead of Women’s T20 Qualifiers

Uganda Cricket Association has lined up a build-up tournament for the Victoria Pearls as they continue with the preparations for the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifiers that will be hosted in Entebbe, Uganda in December.

The development was revealed by the Victoria Pearls head coach Lawrence Ssematimba on Wednesday during a press conference held in Logogo.

The Qualifier will feature eight teams including Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Namibia, Botswana, Kenya and hosts Uganda, but the build up tournament will feature only the four East African nations.

Speaking at the press conference, Ssematimba said;

“We were supposed to take our preparations to Rwanda, but as a coach I thought it wise for the team to stay here.

“We shall have a camp of two weeks in Entebbe then come back to Kampala for that tournament. We are looking forward to that pre-qualifier tournament to give us a good picture of ourselves.”

The built-up tournament is set to take place early November, and so far Kenya and Rwanda have confirmed participation. Tanzania the other East African side is yet to confirm.

Uganda is seeking to qualify for World Cup for the first time in history. If they manage to make the top two in December, the Victoria Pearls will make a return to the Global Qualifiers having made their first appearance in 2018 in the Netherlands after winning the Regional Qualifiers in Namibia the previous year.

The last time Uganda hosted a Women’s qualifying event was 12 years and they came out victors.
