Uganda has been struck by a storm characterized by extreme distress in less than a week. Uganda Cranes midfielder Mike Azira in a letter addressed to Moses Magogo, the incumbent president Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) announced his resignation from National Football team effective April 14, 2021.
He becomes the third player to hang up his boots after the Captain Denis Onyango and Assistant Captain Hassan Wasswa from National duties.
Mike Azira who is one of the graduates of SC Villa youth academy played an immense role in the qualification of Uganda Cranes to AFCON 2019 in Egypt. This is a huge blow for Uganda as he will also miss out on 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
In his letter, the midfielder stated “I have enjoyed working with the federation and playing for the Uganda National team. Playing in two Africa Cup of nations was one of the best moments with the Cranes. The memories will always stay with me and they will be cherished always”.
Could this be a Uganda Cranes exodus as the veteran players quit National team after more than a decade?
