Reason for tip

- Chelsea have won their last four meetings with Spurs.
- Four of Chelsea’s last 10 League Cup meetings with top flight opposition have ended in 2-1 victories.
Rotation to play defining role on Tuesday
Just a few weeks into the season and Tottenham Hotspur already find themselves at the mercy of a pile up of fixtures, and Jose Mourinho is expected to rotate his team heavily as he plays the third of four games in the space of a week.
The second of these games didn’t exactly go to plan, with a dominant Spurs failing to finish off a hapless Newcastle team before falling victim to a controversial injury time penalty call.
Chelsea, despite producing an epic comeback from 3-0 down, will also end the weekend disappointed after failing to beat West Brom at the Hawthorns. Frank Lampard is also expected to make some fairly drastic changes to avoid fatigue but, unlike his adversary, the Chelsea manager has the depth in his squad to do that.
Indeed, the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Ross Barkley, Matteo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz and Tammy Abraham all started in their 6-0 thrashing of Barnsley last week and we can expect a similar strength lineup here.
While Spurs were granted a bye in the Carabao Cup last week, that’s of little help to Mourinho with a Europa League qualifier coming up just 48 hours after this clash. That guarantees some level of rotation, and Spurs are likely to place more emphasis on their Europa League campaign.
This difference in squad depth, plus the fact that Chelsea have won each of their last four meetings with Spurs, makes an away win our preference for this one. Four of their last 10 League Cup clashes with top flight opponents have ended in 2-1 victories as well, so that’s our choice for a correct score prediction.
