The Rotary Rugby, Girl Child Project Sevens tournament held on May 20th at Kyadondo was a remarkable event that not only showcased the talents of various female rugby teams but also aimed to support the girl child and combat gender-based violence.
By uniting under the theme “Rugby for the betterment of the girl child,” the tournament participants, the Rotary Club and the Uganda Rugby Union made a resounding statement about the need for equality and opportunity in the sporting world and beyond.
The tournament brought together eight teams in two categories- U20 and Senior.
The Thunderbirds emerged as the senior category champions after defeating the Avengers 26-05 in the final while the She Wolves defeated Kitgum Queens 7-0 in the final to claim the U20 category title victory.
The tournament served as a reminder that rugby, and sports in general, can play a significant role in empowering and supporting the girl child, but was also a means of developing the sport of rugby amongst the girl child.
Olive Oyiru of the Nile Leopards, emerged as the Most Valuable Player of the U20 category and it was her second time collecting this award after garnering one in 2021 at the same venue.
