On 24th September 2020, English Premier League giant Chelsea Football Club announced the signing of Senegalese international goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy on a five year contract from Rennes (France).

The 28 year old goalie, Mendy, standing at 6ft 5in(196cm) has seen it all through his life of football to stardom, where he has become a talk everywhere in the world.

The untold story of Edouard Mendy which includes enduring empty promises, giving up on the game, playing without salary for one year and unemployment.


Edouard Osoque Mendy born on 1st March 1992 in Montivilliers, north of France, to Senegalese mother and late father from Guinea Bissau.

Youth career.

Edouard Mendy started off his football career at Least Havre caucricuville at tender age of 7 years before joining Le Havre where he started training the basics of goalkeeping.

Professional career and empty promises.

In 2011, he started his professional career with As Cherbourg and after seeing off his contract in 2014, he received some offers but he waited for his ex Agent to full fill his promise of getting him a club outside France to English league one club. And this didn’t come to happen.

“I tried to contact him (Ex- agent ) but he never responded. I heard nothing from him except A text wishing me good luck for the future.” Mendy once told Le parisen of the botch deal.

Mendy joined the group of Jobless people and returned back to Le Havre.

Quitting the game and spending one without salary.

After one year without sport, Mendy decided to quit the beautiful game of football but rescind his decision and returned back to Le Havre where he started his career and played for them one year without salary.

Change of Fortunes.

Hopeless Mendy, after one year without the job, his old friend Lavie connected him to Dominique Bernatowiz who was in charge of goalkeepers at Olympic Marseille academy.

“I was speaking with one of old friend Dominique Bernatowiz in charge of the goalkeepers at Marseille’s academy and was looking to fill the last spot,” Lavie told BBC sports Africa.

“I told him I used to play with one very good tall, intelligent guy with a lot of room for progress and was trying to find an opportunity.”

Mendy joined Marseille B despite the fact that he used to train with the first team.

Life at Marseille .

“I trained with professionals throughout my stay at Marseille. It is something that one can only dream of as No.4 goalkeeper.

“Training with Stars like Abou Diaby, Lassana Diarra and winning duels against Michy Batshuayi or Steven Fletcher really brought out the best in me.”

But Due to stiff competition at Marseille at the goalkeepers’ department from Flonican Escalles, Mendy decided to look for game time football and landed at Reims while playing in French Ligue 2.

At Reims and Rennes.

Mendy guided Reims to promotion to league one from league two in 2017/18 season and later season, he was seen at the rivals Rennes FC were he helped the team to gain Champions league positions after finishing third after the season was ended prematurely.

Edouard Mendy joins Chelsea FC at a reported fee of £22.5 million.

International career.

In 2016, was called to the national team of Guinea Bissau and took part in the international friendly against Portugal but later on declined the invite as the team was preparing for the African Cup of Nations final tournament games in Gabon and opted to represent The Terenga Lions of Senegal and in 2018 he made his debut and was part of the team that fell short against Algeria in the final of African Cup of Nations last year in Egypt.

He played the first two opening group stage games of the tournament before sustaining an injury that ruled him out of rest of the games.
