SC Villa edge NEC FC to break a 20 year league title drought.

Sports Club Villa edged NEC FC to break the jinx of 20 years without league title.

The Uganda’s most decorated football club in terms of success needed two second half goals from Charles Lwanga and Hakim Kiwanuka to down stubborn NEC FC side who were determined to spoil party for the Joogo side.

Going into the last games of the 2023/24 season, yesterday on 18th May, SC Villa needed just to win their game and which they did perfectly in front of a fully packed Omondi Stadium, Lugogo and at the end of the day winning the league with a point adrift of second placed BUL FC, who were tied with Vipers SC (56 points) but had a better Head to Head over them.

The first half ended with few chances being created on both sides and scare was witnessed among SC Villa’s faithfuls and in fear of the repeat of previous season were they found themselves in same situation and failed to beat URA FC.

In 61st minute, Dhata came close to finding goal for NEC FC as his free kick hit the upper post and went out.

Charles Lwanga headed on Umar Lutaro’s cross to put SC Villa into the lead in 67th minute.

In 75th minute, Patrick Kakande released Hakim Kiwanuka on right side and cut inside the box on run and placed the ball at back of the net and Benjamin Ochan couldn’t stop it.

At final whistle, Villa fans could hide their excitement and broke on to Astro turf of Lugogo celebrate with their fans.

The game was attended many dignitaries, Buganda Kingdom Premier Charles Peter Mayiga who is an ardent Villa fan, FUFA President Moses Magogo, EX – Villa Presidents Immanuel Ben Missaga and Franco Mugabe, former players Dennis Onyango, Charles Bbale and Godfrey Higenyi.

SC Villa extend their record titles to 17 and it’s only KCCA FC who are coming close with 13 titles.

The triumph, meant SC Villa ended a 20 year wait without a league title.

Now SC Villa will represent Uganda in 2024/25 CAF champions League.
