Onyango returns as Sundowns earn 13th straight league win


Dennis Onyango is back, atleast after Mamelodi Sundowns’ 2-1 win against TS Galaxy in the DSTV premiership on Tuesday evening.

Center back Rushine de Reuck and forward Peter Shalulile scored in either half for the Brazilians while D.J Traore got the hosts’ consolation at the death from 12 yards to deny Onyango his first clean sheet in his first league outing of the season.

The gangly former Cranes captain last featured for Masandawana in the CAF champions league second preliminary round win against La passe in October 2022.

Onyango has played second fiddle to Ronwen Williams since the former arrived from Supersport United at the start of the season.

The win was Sundowns’ 13th consecutive league victory taking the Brazilians to 49 points, 19 clear of Salim Jamal’s Richards Bay FC who sit second on 30 points after 19 match days.

Despite having limited playing time so far this season, Onyango will be pivotal for Mamelodi Sundowns when their CAF champions league campaign gets underway in February.

The 2016 African champions are pooled in group B alongside record champions league winners Al Ahly, Sudan’s Al Hilal and Cameroon’s Cotton Sport.
