Onyango picks first clean sheet of the season in Sundown’s 14th straight victory

Former Uganda Cranes captain and goalkeeper Denis Onyango registered his first clean sheet of the campaign as Mamelodi Sundowns won their 14th consecutive game in the DSTV Premier Soccer League.

Ten-man side Sundowns defeated Sekhukhune 2-0 in their backyard Loftus Versefeld Stadium on Saturday.

Peter Shalulile and Cassius Mailula were the scorers while Allende Bravo was the player sent off.

“Cleansheet was very important for the team because we conceded a sloppy goal in the last game, it is important that we worked very hard to make sure we don’t concede,” Onyango said after the game.

Skipper Onyango has spent the largest part of the season playing as a backup goalkeeper to Williams Ronwen.

However, he has now featured in the previous two games against TS Galaxy and Sekhukhune keeping his maiden clean sheet of the PSL against the latter.

“It is always good to be back on the pitch, but also you must consider the person, who is playing, Ronwen has done very well, keeping several clean sheet.”

“You need to support where you are needed, and at this time, we need to support each other because the season is coming to an end where we need mental strength and everyone to work very hard,” Onyango added.

Onyango still holds the record for the second all time clean sheets in the South African top-tier division.

The time PSL champion has now collected121 clean sheets, six behind Kaizer Chiefs’ Itumeleng Khune who is the all-time clean sheet record holder with 127.

Onyango’s Sundowns lead proceedings on the 16-team PSL log with 52 points after 20 games and 22 points ahead of his compatriot Salim Jamal Magoola’s Richards Bay who are on 30 but with three games in hand.

The champions will return to action on Saturday, February 4th away to Orlando Pirates.
