Nigeria FA appoints new Super Eagles’ head coach.

Nigerian Football Federation – NFF has today of 29th April, appointed former Super Eagles star player, George Finidi, as senior men’s National football team’s head coach.

“The Board of Nigeria Football Federation on Monday approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint former ace winger Finidi George as Head Coach of the Senior Men National Football Team, Super Eagles.” Reads part of the statement released by Nigerian Football Federation.

George Finidi replaces Portuguese born coach, Jose Santos Pesseiro who voluntarily stepped down after failing to guide Nigeria to the finals of just Concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Ivory Coast.

Finidi, first acted as an assistantant to Jose Santos Pesseiro before taking reigns as head coach on interim basis, managing to handle two international friendly matches against Ghana (2-1) and Mali (2-0).

The former Ajax Amsterdam player, has been the head coach of Enyimba International since 2021.

He was part of the Super Eagles team that won 1994 African Cup of Nations.

George’s immediate task will be to guide the Super Eagles to victory in two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic in Uyo and Abidjan respectively, in a little over five weeks. The matches are must-win encounters, with the Super Eagles lagging behind in third place in Group C of the African campaign behind Rwanda and South Africa.
