UCU basketball teams have settled for bronze medals in this season’s National Basketball League.

The Women’s side, the UCU Lady Canons eased past JT Lady Jaguars while the Men’s team, the UCU Canons, had to overcome Our Saviour in the other one-off third place match.

It’s a consolation prize for the Lady Canons who started the season as defending champions, but had their journey stopped by JKL Lady Dolphins with a 3-0 sweep in the best of five semifinals.

Against JT Lady Jaguars on Wednesday, despite arriving late, the Lady Canons started off like a house on fire and limited the side to just two points in the first quarter which they won 21-2.

Despite an improved display in the subsequent quarters from JT Lady Jaguars inspired by Maureen Amoding, the Lady Canons held on to their lead.

Amoding scored a game high 24 points but no other JT Lady Jaguars player reached double digits.

Aziida Nabayunga led UCU with 18 points while Millicent Otieno and Shilla Lamunu added 10 points each, with the latter adding 10 rebounds to claim her first double double of the season.

In the Men’s bronze medal match, UCU beat Our Saviour 67-63 in what was a closely contested affair.

UCU who lost their semifinal to KIU Titans, drew inspiration from Peter Sifuma (23pts, 12rebs) and Joel Kayira (15pts, 13rebs) who both scored double doubles.

Moses Mugisha had 17 points while Malual Dier contributed 12 rebounds for Our Saviour in what is the Club’s best season in top flight.

This is the second season in a row that UCU Canons are finishing third having beaten KIU Titans last year in the Bronze medal match.

The National Basketball League finals will tip off on Friday at YMCA court in Wandegeya – KIU Rangers take on JKL Lady Jaguars while City Oilers face KIU Titans.
