Sports Minister Hon Hamson Obua has confirmed receiving Sh30bn to cater for the facelift of Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
The dilapidated stadium has been out of use and Uganda Cranes shifted to St Mary’s Stadium Kitende where they hosted Burkina Faso and South Sudan in the concluded AFCON qualifiers.
The whole renovation work will take sh97bn!
“We have received Sh30bn in the next Financial Year (July 2021 to June 2022). The 30bn out of 97bn as per the Needs Assessment is contained in the next F/Y budget,” Obua to Ndibba.
“The stadium will be ready subject to availability and release of funds from the consolidated fund and will go towards addressing the most pressing and crucial needs. The stadium needs 97bn and 30bn is provided in the budget.”
The renovations are expected to cater for floodlights, dressing rooms, playing surface, Seats and running track among others. Obua had earlier stated that they plan on hiring multiple companies to work on the renovation.
Many onlookers have suggested that the Sh97bn can be used to install more than five small stadiums across the country. Earlier, Obua managed to reclaim the three missing land titles for the Stadium.
The stadium, named after former South African President Nelson Mandela, was built with a grant of $36m from China government and opened in 1997.
It went under refurbishment in 2010 and was the venue as Uganda Cranes booked back to back tickets to Africa Cup of Nations.
