A call up to the national team is always accompanied by a feeling of satisfaction for any footballer and for Mathias Kigonya, it’s no different.
The stout but agile Uganda cranes and Azam FC goalkeeper is part of the summoned 31 players that are going to prepare for Burkina Faso and Malawi 2022 AFCON qualifiers.
Despite being snubbed for quite some time goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya never gave up on his dream of being back on the national team duty.
“It feels great to be back on the national team but it has been a process and football is about time. And time is now.
“I have been working hard and I think am ready for the challenge and competition on the national team, “he spoke to me in an exclusive interview.
Kigonya was last called up for the national team duty in 2016 for the Chan tournament.
His impressive performance at Zambian premier league side Forest rangers FC helped him secure a deal to Tanzania side Azam FC where he is now as their number one choice goalkeeper .
The cranes are currently second in group B on seven points and will face group leaders Burkina Faso on 24th March 2021 in Kampala and Malawi away on 30th March 2021
