Uganda Martyrs WFC needed to come from a goal down to overcome resilient Olila High School WFC on Sunday in Lubaga.
In a closely contested encounter, the visitors took the lead through Grace Aluka but Uganda Martyrs fought back with second half substitutes Esther Naluyimba and Brenda Munyana netting a goal each.
The home side struggled to find the much needed sharpness in front of goal especially in the first half despite getting several chances.
Olila High School WFC who played with a cautious approach frustrated Uganda Martyrs WFC for long spells until when the resilience was broken in the final half hour.
Aluka opened the scores three minutes after restart against the run of play, thanks to Cecilia Apiding who teed her up.
Coach Rogers Nkugwa of Uganda Martyrs reacted by making a triple substitution, bringing on Naluyimba, Munyana and Latifa Nakasi who indeed turned the game around.
In the 61st minute, Uganda Martyrs won a free kck at the edge of the box and it was midfielder Kevin Nakacwa who took it. Her well curled effort bounced off the goal post and Naluyimba was well stationed to fire home from the rebound.
16 minutes to fulltime, Munyana beat Olila defenders for pace and slotted past on the rushing goalkeeper, sending the students into wild celebrations.
The win lifts Uganda Martyrs to third place on six points and the School side will return to action next weekend with a trip to Kabojja to face Kampala Queens.
Olila High School on the other hand drop to sixth place on 3 points with their next fixture pitting them against She Maroons at home.
In the other games played on Sunday, Kampala Queens registered their first win this season, edging past She Maroons thanks to Margaret Kunihira’s solitary strike.
Kawempe Muslim LFC were held at home by Tooro Queens. Imelda Kasemire gave the Country Queens the lead but the hosts salvaged a point through Hadijah Nandago’s equalizer.
