After FUFA Excom deciding to end the 2020/21 Uganda Premier League prematurely and awarding Express Football Club the title since they were on top of the league summit (58 points) by the time the Sports activities in the Country were put on hold due to Covid-19.
“The FUFA Emergency Executive Committee has on Tuesday 29th June 2021 taken the decision to end the 2020/21 StarTimes Uganda Premier League based on Article 18, Section 1, Sub-section C & D of the FUFA Competition rules.” Reads part of Statement on FUFA website.
So, the winner of the league represents Uganda in the CAF Championships League the most prestigious club competition on African continent.
When it came to second ranked competition on the continent, that’s Total Energies CAF Confederation Cup, FUFA handed the ticket to Uganda Revenue Authority Football who were second on the table log with 57 points to represent Uganda.
“URA FC who were second on the Uganda Premier League table at the time the lockdown was imposed will represent Uganda in the CAF Confederation Cup.” Says FUFA decision.
Express FC who won their seventh league title and URA FC, both of the teams return to Continental Football after a long period of time.
Express FC last played on continent football, that was 2008 when they got knocked out on penalties (4-2) by Congolese giants AS Vita at the first round of CAF Confederation Cup after tieing on aggregate (0-0).
Despite the fact that they (Express FC) the league for 2011/12 season, they didn’t represent Uganda at CAF Champions League by that time because had financial constraints and URA FC opted to represent Uganda in CAF CL instead of CAF Confederation Cup.
For URA FC’s sake they have been out of Continental Football for a period of close to six years.
The last time they appeared on playing continental football was against South Africa club, Orlando Pirates in 2015 and got knocked out on the first round of CAF Confederation Cup.
URA FC’S journey with Continental Football has been not fruitful since they have never played in the group Stages of either competition of the two that’s CAF CL and CAF CC since making their debut in 2006 while playing against World Hope (Nairobi City Stars FC ).
The tax collectors have played to a tune of 20 games on continent, managing Five (5) wins, Eight (8) draws and seven (7) loses.
They (URA FC) have scored 15 goals and conceded 25 goals in both competitions (note: including a 3-0 loss , walker over against Djoliba in 2012).
Last season, Vipers SC represented Uganda in CAF Champions League while KCCA FC CAF Confederation Cup.
