Eight Selected For Street Child Cricket World Cup

The ICC World Cup trophy fever engulfed the local cricket fraternity when the coveted trophy made it’s way to the Pearl of Africa last month.

Cricket fanatics went crazy over the arrival of the trophy, and rightly so, savoured every moment with the trophy.

If what UCA’s media team did to earn the Best Digital award for their efforts in promoting the 2022 ICC U19 World Cup was graded at 80%, the team this time went full throttle in welcoming the trophy to the 256 land.

Now, not only did Uganda host the trophy for the first time ever, Uganda will appear at the Street Child Cricket World Cup for the first time ever.

From the townships of Soroti and Masaka to the slums of Naguru, an opportunity has been presented to eight Ugandan boys and girls.

The Octad of Aziz Tandia, Ali Balidawa, Jonathan Nyiro, Gerald Olipa, Malisa Ariokot, Agnes Nakakande, Lorna Anyait and Naome Amongin have etched their names in history as they become the first youngsters to represent Uganda at this one of a kind tournament.

Uganda might be competing at the tournament for the first time, but 16-year-old Ariokot, who made her national team debut in June at the Kwibuka Memorial tournament in Rwanda is confident they’ll produce a shocker in India.

“I’m extremely elated and proud to be out there representing my country,” Ariokot said. “Looking at the team, I think we can go all the way in the competition. We just have to believe in ourselves and do our best.”

The Street 20 is an initiative aimed at bringing together the underprivileged from across the globe to not only showcase their talent on the field, but also their cultural identity.

This year’s edition which is the second will take place in Chennai, India, and 15 countries including the United Kingdom, Brazil, Hungary, Mexico, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Rwanda among others have lined up for the event.

What makes this event even more special is the fact that it precedes the ICC Cricket World Cup that bowls off in October in India.

The Street 20 will run between 22nd September to 1st October at the at Amir Mahal in Chennai.
