Uganda played at its sixth straight African Nations Championship (CHAN) at the ongoing 2022 edition in Algeria.

Despite bowing out at the group stage level yet again, Uganda Cranes head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic believes that this was his side’s best tournament ever.

“Uganda has qualified for CHAN six times, first it was in 2011, and got zero points in the last position,” Micho said at the Cranes luncheon at FUFA House in Mengo on Sunday.

“In 2014 with me we got four points and we finished third in the group, in 2016 we were third with two points, in 2018 and 2020 the Cranes were last with one point apiece.”

“Now we have again managed four points still in a third position like it was in 2014 but I believe this has been by far Cranes’ best performance at CHAN,” he noted.

Uganda played to barren draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo before edging Senegal 1-0, they lost their last group game against Ivory 3-1 when all they needed was a draw to advance.

However, there was much positive to carry home after failing to go beyond the group stages for a sixth consecutive time.

The attitude and character of the players were top-notch throughout all three games, especially against Ivory Coast.

“I have been with Uganda three times at CHAN but this time around when looking at different aspects, there was a sense of pride,” Micho stated.

“We can not forget the fact that we were also disappointed not to achieve our target of qualifying for the quarterfinals but I wanted to give credit to the players for the effort they put in.”

The Cranes have collected a total of 10 points in all the three times they played at CHAN with Micho as the coach.
