CHAN 2022: No one to blame for ‘shitty’ football this time around

After the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Cameroon FUFA president Moses Magogo was bitter with the Uganda Cranes for their poor performance.

This was after the players demanded the unpaid allowances: “These CHAN players, what did they play? They went there and played ‘shitty’ football.”

“When you demand money what did you play?” a bitter Magogo then questioned.

At the tournament that was played in 2021, the Cranes finished fourth in Group C with a single point.

However, three years later, the FUFA boss was pleased with what he saw at the ongoing 2022 CHAN in Algeria even though the Cranes still did not go beyond the group stages for the sixth straight time.

“Not everything that happens wrong in the world there is supposed to be someone to blame and that is where we get it wrong,” Magogo said at Cranes’ post-CHAN luncheon at FUFA House in Mengo on Sunday.

“There were some positives we picked as the Executive although the results are not what our objective of at least getting out of the group was, we commend the coach and the players.”

“If these positives are consolidated and we work on the areas that need to be improved we have a very beautiful group of players that can take us many miles going forward.”

“When you look at the players we had at this CHAN most of them were playing there for the very first time but put up some solid performances.”

Magogo added: “Considering the attitude shown, each player will receive an allowance worth $2500 which is more than UGX9M.”

“This will help to motivate and show them that it is not just about the results of the match but it is also about the effort.”

The Cranes finished third in Group B with four points after drawing 0-0 with the Democratic Republic of Congo, edging Senegal 1-0.

They lost 3-1 to Ivory Coast in the final group game where they needed just a point to break the jinx and qualify for the quarterfinals.

Overall, the Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic-coached side finished ninth in the tournament which is arguably their best performance ever.
