CHAN 2022: Cranes out to seal historical feat

The Uganda Cranes will lock horns with Ivory Coast in their final Group B game at the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) at the Nelson Mandela Stadium, Algiers in Algeria on Sunday.

Uganda is a step away from making history by reaching the knockout stages of the competition for the first time in six attempts.

“We have brought ourselves on the edge of making history by producing four points from two games,” Uganda Cranes head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic told FUFA media before adding.

“At this level, we need to put in mind special thinking having drawn the first game and won the second. In the third match, we need to seal qualification to the next stage and enter the history books.”

“But we need to know that we are playing a team whose results have not reflected what they have put on the field and this will make the task much harder.”

“We have to find the right balance between dangerous attacking because they will have to risk, and closing their points of danger, and then exposing their sources of vulnerability,” he added.

Victory over Senegal took the Pearl of Africa top of Group B with four points from two games.

They are followed by the Lions of Teranga who are on three points, the Democratic Republic of Congo is third with two points whereas Ivory Coast is bottom with a single point.

“We won our previous game but there were some mistakes and we have tried to correct them in training,” midfielder Moses Waiswa stated ahead of the game.

“The target is to win the final game so that we can finish top of the group and I am optimistic this will help us go far in the competition.”

As Uganda plays Senegal, on the same day and time, DRC will also be in action to face Ivory Coast.

A win will ensure that the Cranes finish top of Group B, and a draw will see them go through as runners-up should Senegal beat DRC.

Defeat to Ivory Coast will see the Cranes bow out should DRC beat Senegal.

To avoid a complicated situation at the end of it all, the CECAFA giants should win against Ivory Coast or at least pick a draw.
