The sixth edition of African Nations Championships kicked off over the weekend on Saturday 16th January with the host nation (Cameroon) fighting so hard to edge Zimbabwe Warriors (1-0) and Mali defeating Burkina Faso with the same scoreline in group A.
Yesterday on Sunday, 17th January, Libya -Niger played to a goalless draw and two times Champions, DR.Congo left it late to defeat neighbors Congo Brazaville (1-0) in group C.
Today 18th January, Uganda Cranes will be opening their 5th straight campaign in an East African Derby when they take on Amavubi Stars of Rwanda who are making their 4th Competition appearance.
Defending Champions, Morocco will be taking on debutants Togo in group C.
Northern Irishman Johnathan Mcknistry’s coached side will be hopping to register their second win in the final tournament with the first and only win coming in the 3rd edition of tournament against Burkina Faso (2-0) in tournament which was hosted in South Africa, 2014.
Uganda has never gone past the group stages in last four editions they have taken part.
Out of the 12 games that Uganda has played in the previous editions which has seen them register 1 win, 4 draws and 7 loses.
Mcknistry is optimistic that Uganda will make the last 8 (quarter finals) this time round and have to start with a victory.
“It’s a tough group, but our objective is to reach the next round. We have to start with a victory,” said McKinstry.
“It’s a bit special to play against my old group. Rwanda coach Mashami worked with me. But my goal is to win. We take the matches one by one,” he added
