Burundi National football team captain, Saido Berahino has come out to say that Burundi Qualifying for their maiden Africa Nations cup in 2019 in Egypt was not just a fluke as they want to prove it by Qualifying for the successive tournament for the 2022 edition which is set to take place in Cameroon.
Burundi is in group E and comes in 3rd position, one point behind Mauritania (2nd) and will have to play Central African Republic before they wrap up the qualifying games with Morocco.
“We’ve worked so hard to get to the position that we are now – after qualifying already for the first time in history,” Berahino told BBC Sport Africa.
“We want to show the people it was not just a fluke.”
Burundi who were among the three debutants along side Mauritania and Madagascar in 2019 African Cup of Nations.
Saido Berahino represented England at U19, U20 and U21 levels before switching allegiance to play for his country of birth and believes that they have got chance of attaining a second successive qualification to the final tournament.
“We want to qualify again – because we’ve got the hunger, we’ve got the desire,” he said.
“And we’ve had the taste of the tournament, so it will be wonderful to actually go there – saying that we qualified two times in a row – and try to make a tournament better than the last one.
