Shadir Musa Bwogi’s chances of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics are over.
Bwogi was beaten by Younes Nemouchi of Algeria in the Men’s 80kg at the Round of 32 on Sunday at the ongoing Olympic Qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal.
The Algerian who also beat David Ssemujju at the Tokyo Olympics, won Sunday’s fight 5-0 (Win by Points decision) at the ongoing Olympic Qualifiers.
Bwogi’s inclusion on the Bombers team by Uganda Olympic Committee was met with mixed reviews and it was strongly opposed by Uganda Boxing Federation, for a boxer who turned pro.
“Sorry to my country men and women, today was my bad day in the office but i wish you good luck to Team Uganda please progress for next stage,” Bwogi tweeted after the fight.
Bwogi was eyeing a return to the Olympics stage having qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo when he defeated Ghana’s Jesse Lartey in the welterweight box-off on the last day of the 2020 African Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament thawasre held in Diamniadio, Senegal.
But in Tokyo, he lost 3–1 to Eskerkhan Madiev of Georgia.
Bwogi who had got a bye at the round of 64, joins Grace Nankinga and Jonah Kyobe who lost their fights on Saturday.
Joshua Tukamuhebwa knocked out Ethiopia’s Alem Gebremariam in the second round of their Men’s 63.5kg round of 32 fight.
Tukamuhebwa, the Bombers captain, will meet Farlo Ndjinga of Gabon (who beat Benin’s Henry Lontchedji 5-0) on Monday.
Isaac Zebra Ssenyange got a 4-1 win over South Africa’s Simnikiwe Bongco in the Men’s 71kg round of 32.
Ssenyange previously got a walkover at the round of 64 when his South Sudan opponent Deng Malou failed to show up, and he has now progressed to the Round of 16.
The son to late Zebra Mando, will now face Michael Pakela of Lesotho who best Boniface Mugunde 4-1, in the forthcoming Round of 16.
The other boxer for Uganda Fathia Mawanda will step in the ring for the first time at these games, having received a bye at the first round, and will be up against Senegal’s Sow Pape Mamadou in the Men’s 51kg round of 16.
