Uganda’s first runner on the National Stadium track when athletes take Centre stage at the Olympic Games on Friday is debutant Albert Chemutai in 3000m steeplechase at 3:30am.
Chemutai is ranked 25th Globally in the Events, whose personal best is 8:12:29 at the 2019 Monaco Diamond League and will be hoping for a slot in the Top three in Heat 1. The top three in each heat, and the best 6 in all the three automatically qualify for the Finals on August 2.

He also represented Uganda in the 2017 World Championship in London, at the 60th Ostrava Golden Spike in Czech where he recorded a time of 8:31:21 therefore he’s not new to the World Scenes.
He is set to defy the odds against Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girmawho’s the favorite to win, Kenya’s Benjamin Kigen and Djilali Bedrani from France.

Also, Chemutai could be the first Ugandan to win a medal in this category at the Olympics. Jacob Araptany qualified through the heat but did not finish for a medal in Rio 2016.
