Afrobasket: Gazelles Learn Round of 16 Opponent

Uganda Women’s National Basketball team, the Gazelles will face DR Congo at the round of 16 of the ongoing 2023 FIBA Women Afrobasket in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Gazelles finished second in Group D with one win against Senegal and a loss against Mali in the opener.

Mali topped the group with two wins, including beating Senegal 72-49 in the last group game on Sunday, to go direct to the Quarterfinals.

Per the tournament format, the four group winners qualify automatically to the Quarterfinals while the second and third teams in the groups play a round of 16.

Uganda who have finished second in Group C, will hence face the bottom team in Group D (DR Congo) for a place in the Quarterfinals.

DR Congo lost their two group games against Nigeria (69-36) and Egypt(89-78).

And winner will meet hosts Rwanda, who topped group A despite falling to Angola in overtime on Sunday, in the Quarterfinal.

DR Congo who are ranked 10th on the Continent, have won the Afrobasket thrice in 1983, 1990 and 1998 but have looked a shadow of themselves since.

Cecille Nyoka and Mariana Maudi who are averaging 10 and 11 points in Kigali, will be the stars to watch out for DR Congo as the neighbors face off.

If Uganda can overcome both DR Congo and Rwanda, Defending champions Nigeria who are favorites to eliminate winner between Mozambique and Ivory Coast, await.

Senegal who finished bottom of Group D, will meet Egypt in the other round of 16 tie while Angola and Guinea will also tussle it out.

Rwanda (A), Cameroon (B), Mali (C) and Nigeria (D) topped their respective groups and are already in the Quarterfinals due Tuesday.
